Reopened to the public in September of 2024, The Vernier Science Center at Portland State University (formerly Science Building 1) has undergone a transformative renovation to modernize the facility and align it with the university’s commitment to sustainability, inclusivity, and cutting-edge STEM education.

Environmental Sustainability and Efficiency

Originally constructed in 1967, the building’s redesign prioritizes environmental stewardship, accessibility, and community engagement. The project incorporates sustainable building practices to achieve LEED Gold certification, with a potential for LEED Platinum.

In 2018, at an early stage of capital investment, I collaborated with key stakeholders to produce the initial fundraising video for the Vernier Building (at the time still known as Science Building 1).

It was an interesting project to me at the time that I filmed the fundrasing video, and I was excited to see that the facility had finally been reopened.

Key energy-efficient upgrades include heat recovery systems, energy-efficient windows, LED lighting, and low-flow plumbing fixtures. The reuse of the existing structure minimizes embodied carbon, while the inclusion of climbing vines and green spaces enhances the building’s connection to nature. These features reduce the environmental footprint and align with PSU’s broader climate goals.

Inclusive Design and Equity

A central goal of the renovation was to create an inclusive, welcoming space for all students, particularly those from historically underrepresented backgrounds in science. The design process used a Critical Race spatial lens, incorporating input from BIPOC and Indigenous students. Unique features like a decolonized library, a food/plant teaching kitchen, and community gathering spaces reflect diverse cultural traditions and ways of learning. The building now balances transparency with privacy, ensuring accessibility while celebrating the contributions of all students.

Enhancing Learning and Research

The six-story facility serves as a hub for STEM education, housing disciplines such as biology, chemistry, environmental science, and Indigenous Nations studies. It includes classrooms, teaching and research labs, and informal learning spaces. By showcasing science through open and collaborative environments, the Vernier Science Center supports practical and applied learning while inspiring future generations of scientists.

Community and Connectivity

Located at the heart of PSU’s downtown campus, the Vernier Science Center creates a vibrant, community-minded destination. Features like glass-wrapped common areas maximize natural light and provide a connection to the outdoors. The design integrates public art and greenery to make the building both functional and inviting for students and the surrounding community.

The renovation, with an $82 million budget, is a testament to PSU’s mission to foster equity, innovation, and sustainability. Now open to all students, The Vernier Center promises to be a beacon for advancing education and environmental consciousness.
